In the waters off Sorsogon Province, Philippines, you can watch them ponderously glide alongside your boat - or choose to swim along with a Butanding, or even several - some 10 of them at any one time on lucky days. Such an unique phenomenon cannot be found in other parts of The Philippines, or even in other parts of the world !
These harmless, gentle giants of the sea feed only on plankton and krill. Considered the largest fish in the world, measuring from 15 ft. to as long as 40 ft. in length, they converge in the waters off Sorsogon Province, particularly in the towns of Donsol, Pilar, Castilla and Magallanes, starting sometime during the months of October and November - with peak sightings in the months of February to May. A true success story in conservation these magnificent animals were once hunted by the local fisherman. They now enjoy complete protection throughout the Philippine Archipelago.
We complete your unique nature experience by rowing you down in a small boat to the mouth of the river just before the sun sets over this mangrove forest, here we watch the fireflies light up entire trees, giving off a serene scene. |
