MINDANAO
“The fruit basket of the Philippines”
South of The Visayas is the large island of Mindanao, second in size to Luzon. Here Muslim Filipino outnumber the Catholic / Christian Filipino causing tension the last couple of decades. Make inquiries with your embassy about the
updated security conditions!
Mindanao offers a diverse
etnic population, volcanoes, superb falls, the country’s highest mountain Mt. Apo (2,953 m) with its rare orchids, and still pristine
rainforest , home to the almost extinct Philippine Eagle. 3 to 4 days treks to Mt Apo can be arranged. Excellent trekking can also be found
in the Bukidnon region around Cagayan de Oro. Various tribes live in the remote region around Lake Sebu, north of “Tuna
City” General Santos.
SIARGAO ISLAND
Siargao island is the biggest in the group of islands east of Surigao. Its location is close to the 20.000 ha sanctuary “Agusan Marsh”
with its floating houses, abundant plant & wildlife. Siargao is recently starting to get fame internationally for its surfing, known as
“Cloud 9”. Also the nature in this area is truly amazing looking like El Nido and Busuanga. Can either be reached taking airplane
Manila to Cebu, then fly to Surigao plus 15 minutes jeepney ride to the pier plus 2 hour ferry ride to Siargao. Since there is possibility
to miss that ferry, we advice to take the more convenient alternative of flying directly Cebu-Siargao with Seair.
CAMIGUIN ISLAND
This pear shaped rustic island of the north coast of Mindanao, in the Bohol Sea, is not much visited. Maybe because it takes time to get there,
since it is really a beautiful island. There are 7 volcanoes and several falls, cold - & hot springs on this tiny volcanic island with
charcoal-gray sand. A white strip of sand can only be seen during low tide. Mt. Hibok-Hibok ,being the most active volcano (1,320 m), can
be climbed to the summit in 4 hours. The best time to dive (best visibility) is February-June. In October every year, visitors are treated
to the “Lanzones Festival”. A fruit which generates the island’s main income source.
From Cebu airport a 19 seater plane leaves twice a week to Camiguin (40 mins ow). Via Mindanao it is accessible via Cagayan de Oro airport
+ 2 hours land ride to Balingoan Port + 1 hour boat ride to Benoni Port on Camiguin island.
